Feedback from the interns of VUB at Comundos, 2024
Three master students from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) interned with us. They did an excellent job with high-quality translations in Spanish, French, Dutch and English. Their willingness to collaborate and connect with our global network was valuable. As an organization, we experienced a close-knit team that supports each other to achieve our goals. At Comundos, we also prioritize supporting them to discover their own talents. A sincere thank you to Micaela, Ingrid and Asmae for their great contributions to Comundos!

Interning at Comundos was a very educational experience. My passion for intercultural conversations and connections was strengthened by working on creative projects with young people from Portugal and Benin. In my daily life, I would not have had the opportunity to work with people on the other side of the world. I am very grateful to Comundos for this experience. Learning different perspectives from different countries by translating different stories has given me a broader view of the world. For example, translating the story ‘Memórias Iluminadas’ (Memories Brought to Light) from the Brazilian rainforest, fascinated me. The photos and the serene transmission of the story made it almost feel like I was there. That is what I love about Comundos. The NGO makes it possible for people all over the world to share stories from different countries and cultures with each other, which can make us feel more connected. From now on, I will be more open to talking to people from different countries, on a personal and hopefully work-related level and I am already looking forward to future Comundos projects.

The internship at Comundos was truly an eye-opener. I had the opportunity to discover many different cultures and people from different countries around the world by translating and subtitling digital stories. These stories taught me how to be more aware of the experiences and perspectives of people in other countries. They also taught me that many people in this world are facing many extremely difficult challenges such as climate change and lack of access to education. In other words, this internship helped me to expand my knowledge of the world and my worldview. Besides discovering other cultures and countries, I also learned how to create my own digital story. This was a positive learning experience that taught me many things such as how to write a compelling and interesting story, how to edit a video and how to make an audio recording. During this internship I translated all kinds of fascinating stories, but there was one that stood out to me and that I found very interesting, namely the story "Navigating between two cultures". As a child of immigrants, I could really relate to this, because in my life I also had to struggle between two cultures and identities. I would recommend an internship at Comudos to everyone. The internship not only helps you to develop yourself professionally and linguistically, but also personally.
Asmae Maataoui:
I was given the opportunity to do an internship at Comundos, and I am very grateful for that. The assignments were varied: most days I was allowed to translate digital stories of people from the Global South into the different languages that Comundos offers. Other days I was given the space to work on my own digital story. This is a wonderful initiative by Bart Vetsuypens, the internship supervisor, which aims to bring groups from the Global South and Global North closer together and let them learn from each other. During the internship we were able to make contact with students from Bénin, for example, which taught us a lot about their world. At the same time we were also able to teach them something about our way of life in the North. By translating digital stories, creating them myself and helping other students with their own stories, I have experienced how powerful this form of storytelling can be. It is an accessible way to contribute to change and to make the world a little more beautiful by understanding each other better. This internship has not only helped me develop my professional skills, such as translating and creating stories, but has also given me valuable intercultural experiences. It was an educational, but short, internship that I would recommend to everyone.
A gift for Comundos
Over the years, Comundos has helped remote communities around the world by teaching critical thinking, media literacy and the use of communication technology.
To do this effectively, we need your support for computers, translations, courses and social media management.
Thank you .
