The differences and inequality between gender have existed for many years, and continue to exist. In some countries, there have been improvements related to gender equality, but in other countries, whether due to culture, religion, or lifestyle, society continues to see women as the lowest gender and it is not offered the same opportunities for women as for men.

While statistically the numbers indicate that most girls kept out of school are in developing countries. However violence against women is to be found in about the same percentages in developed countries as it is in the developing world; more so in developed countries with the current lockdowns.

Gender Equality is an important SDG(5) and people from different continents want to achieve that goal. One of the ways to do it is by making short videos where different stories are told so that others reflect on that issue and propose some ideas.

General questions to introduce the topic of Gender Equality:

• Teachers ask students ‘what is gender inequality’? All students together must draw a definition of Gender Inequality.

• What do you think that we, as citizens, can do to improve women's and girls’ situation?

• Explain a situation where you identified discrimination towards women or inequality between women and men.

• What is the difference between equality and equity? If students do not know the answer, teachers must explain it to them: 

“Gender equality, equality between men and women…does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities will not depend on whether they were born male or female. Gender equity means fairness of treatment for men and women according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities.” – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
