Intercultural exchange as a means to better understand our world
The Earth is a planet with many traditions and natural resources. An intercultural exchange can help us understand our world better.
In February 2018, an exchange day was organised between pupils of Kiruhura Secondary School in Rwanda and Belgian pupils of the College of Saint Quirin in Huy.
This took place in the context of the Move with Africa programme and to strengthen the fraternisation between Belgians and Rwandans.
These youth, accompanied by the managers of Entraide, Fraternité and APROJUMAP, followed a training course on interculturalism.
In working groups, they discussed solidarity. By referring to the effectiveness of the solidarity actions they experienced, they showed that the spirit of unity makes us stronger.
They also presented the peculiarities of Rwanda, such as mountain gorillas, monkeys, dancing with arms mounted like the horns of a royal cow "Inyambo" and introduced the local crafts such as mat making, milk processing and others.
The Belgians talked about the winter, but also about their culture: the Atomium, Maneke Pis and Tintin, whose comics are known all over the world.
In the afternoon, these young people shared a meal. It was a pleasure to sit together and eat at the same table!
Then the young people got to know each other in the basketball and volleyball games. Now that was a wonderful atmosphere! The students of Kiruhura were even proud to wear the sports jerseys of the Belgian team.
The cultural evening was also a great time of entertainment, traditional songs and dances. Everyone was happy on both sides.
The visit ended in the evening, but for our pupils it was only the beginning of the adventure. For it was not only an opportunity to share, but also to strengthen our living together as citizens of the world.
