Description2:

Let's start with the soft expression “Once upon a time”, the great wall of China was built to protect Chinese states and empires from invasion.

This fact reminds us of the Mexican Wall, which, more than a protection of the border between two countries, is also considered an ideological barrier. Equivalent to the Berlin Wall, the objective is the same, namely policies of containment and the imposition of barriers; more precisely to divide, isolate and create social barriers amongst people. It would be nice if it were like in the “Once upon a time” tales, but it is not.

Walls are real and loaded with metaphors, strong metaphors. Let us take a look at the case of a Brazilian community, in the northeast of Brazil. It is the community of Mutirão located in the city of Crato, in the southern part of the state, Ceará. The inhabitants used to be able to enjoy looking at a large part of the city centre.

Included in this beautiful view is the Pedro Felício Cavalcante Exhibition Park, where a large agricultural fair and concerts with national bands take place.

Our community, being located on top of a hill, had a privileged view of the event and of the city. However, the state government, through the park managers, using the justification of delimiting the space, claiming the intention to avoid occupation of the land with housing, built a wall along the entire length of the community's main street.

Denoting negative feelings in the residents, many of them give testimonies of how this wall limited their rights to be part of the city.

These testimonies are recorded in an audiovisual form. There are also records of the place in question through photos. Residents who were heard expressed their feelings about the wall and their dreams for the future with the possibility of having it removed.

We have put together, in this report, all the records we could to express the anguish and anxieties of our people, as well as to sensitise them to the struggle for the removal of this wall that is causing us a feeling of abandonment and exclusion.

In addition to the interests of our community, we intend to spread this report so that as many people as possible may get to know and understand our search for a better place to live in a positive manner. May our story be an inspiration for other stories. May our dream, our struggle have an ending equal to or better than the stories of the “Once upon a time...”
